Pyin Oo Lwin is formerly known as May Myo or the city of Flower is  just one hour drive from Mandalay. Small town is well known for cold weather- beautiful botanical garden, colonial buildings and falls. Charming town is situated 67km from Mandalay 1070m above sea level. Several things to do when you are in Pyin Oo Lwin.

Botanical garden

Pyin Oo Lwin was founded in the year 1787 during the reign of King Bodawpaya it was small village and under the name of Pyin Oo. In 1850 Myanmar Officers from Amarapura came to Pyin Oo on duty.  For its beautiful scenery they added “Lwin” it its name and the name of the village became Pyin Oo Lwin.

During colonial period, the cute town was widely known as May Myo means the town of May. In 1887, British Military gave name May Myo officially. May Myo become British Hill Station when construction of the railway from Mandalay to Kulon started. For its elevation, situation, climate and environment impress they decided to build a town on a typical English model. In the year 1990, railway between Mandalay and May Myo was opened. The headquarters of British troops was transferred to May Myo from Mandalay in 1904. Wet and dry tea, cheroot wrappers, shan food stuff, farming and forest products were brought down to Mandalay after connecting the two towns by rail and road.

Peik Chin Myaung cave and fall

Office building, Post Office, Telegraph Office, Railway station, Governor’s House were built in the typical English Style. And the town became British summer resort. The lake and Botanical garden was created.

  The Clock Tower or Purcell Tower in the heart of the town was made in 1934 by Gillete and Johnson for the commemoration of the Silver Jubilee of the reign of King George 5 of Britain.

Stroll around Pyin Oo Lwin by horse drawn coach called gharry that is standard transport of the city is recommendable.

 Spend couple of hours walking in the Kandawgyi botanical garden

Pyin Oo Lwin is the city of falls. Peikchinmyaung cave and fall, Befalls can be reach by car easily. Anisakhan fall can be reach just by walking (30 minutes down, one hour up) which is hidden paradise of Pyin Oo Lwin.

Orange farm

Cultivated land around Pyin Oo Lwin is fertile and good weather for cultivation as well as for plantation. There are many Orange farms and coffee farms. Agricultural tourism becomes part of the agricultural tourism in Pyin Oo Lwin.

Short walk to tribe villages around Pyin Oo Lwin is a good idea if you like walking on High Mountain. Pass through fertile cultivated fields, shan villages feel for the beauty of nature. There are several routes for trekkers and can choose soft trek or hard trek.

You cannot walk but want to feel beauty of nature can try motor bike tour aroud Pyin Oo Lwin. Colorful and endless cultivated fields, tribe villages will well come your visit. 

Before going out from charming Pyin Oo Lwin should not forget to stop at central market for some fresh fruit. Pyin Oo Lwin central market is so clean and just local market will not find any souvenir at all. 

Deedok fall and blue pond

Deedok falls and blue pond is on the way from Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin. It is half an hour drive from junction of Pyin Oo Lwin Mandalay main road. Upon arrival to car park, walk about 30 minutes along the stony way there is beautiful Deedok fall (dry season no fall). If you do not mind for clean dressing room, can have a swim in Deedok blue pond.
